I’m assuming this is a continuation of the previous thread you created? If so, why was it necessary to create a whole new one? Confused the hell out of me to see the title and comment with no context around it.

The farewell to Pike left me absolutely gutted. He was SO GREAT, and I became SO attached. With the satisfying Saru character developments I mentioned last week, The Big Chair will clearly be in good hands come season 3, but…Anson Mount managed to do in just over a dozen episodes what it takes some characters years: made a massive impact and instantly became one of my favorite Trek characters of all time. His demeanor and command style, to me, make Kirk feel like a reckless frat boy by comparison almost. And I HATE saying that because I absolutely love Kirk. With his legacy tied so closely to the Enterprise, there’s absolutely no way we’ll get to se him in action again short of a TOS prequel set on that ship. And there would be rioting in the fandom if something that ballsy were to be attempted, so there’s no way in hell they’d try it. So yeah. This week just really made me sad because I knew it was time to say goodbye. And I bloody hate goodbyes.

A few scattered thoughts in no particular order:

          1. 1000% agree regarding Captain Pike. I’ve been in mourning since the halfway point of the season after realizing the exact same thing, because we know we’re losing him at the end of the season.

          2. I’m still annoyed that it looks more and more like we’re doing a Borg origin story. Monsters are always so much more frightening when their details are left in the shadows of the imagination.

          3. The dedication to character arcs is extremely commendable, and I can think of no better example than that of Saru. Watching him very coolly and calmly approve Burnham’s mission without a second’s hesitation, in a conversation that only took maybe 2-3 minutes, speaks entire volumes about how far we’ve seen this character come. I got an acute sense of satisfaction from that.

          4. Burnham and Spock reconciling was a good moment, but it muddies the water even further about why he or his father never mentioned her. And I know, I know, I know, we’ve been promised that it’ll all make sense later, but it’s still strange to me.

          5. I pity the new generation of fans who are watching this as their first Trek, and have absolutely NO clue what a big deal many elements of this season have been. Seeing the Talosians, the foreshadowing of Pike’s fate, etc. As a huge fan of TOS, and those characters probably being my favorites (with Spock firmly in the #1 spot), all the homage that’s been paid is lovely. Just like I loved seeing the old bridge in TNG’s ‘Relics,’ or seeing my other favorite crew from DS9 go full 23rd century in ‘Trials and Tribble-ations.’ It never gets old. Now I’m waiting for the Enterprise uniforms to become standard issue throughout the fleet, so I can see them every week!

          6. Mary Chieffo absolutely owns the character of L’Rell and is a delight to watch. Only Robert O’Reilly’s gleeful embrace of all Gowron’s insanity is in that class for me.

          7. I was THRILLED to finally see Reno again. She’s been woefully underused this season, but the scene she had with Culber almost made up for that entirely. Very touching, and superbly executed.

I think that’s pretty much it for now. 🙂

Uh oh Jules. Control saying “struggle is pointless” sounds a hell of a lot like “resistance is futile” to me! And then an injection of nanites? Yep. It’s looking like we’re 1001% heading in that direction. Blah.

Am I the only one in COMPLETE and utter denial that Pike will be leaving at the conclusion of this season? Every passing week being better than the last just makes that fact harder to deal with 🙁 So glad we got to spend a significant amount of time with this character for the first time in over 50 years. Jeff Hunter only doing the one episode, and Bruce Greenwood only being a supporting character in Star Trek ’09 always made me feel Pike unfairly got the short end of the stick. Glad we could finally right that wrong.</p>

I’ve ALWAYS thought it would be amazing if V’Ger had something to do with the Borg. In fact, that’s the story I continue to tell myself! Haha It also reminds me pretty heavily of a two-parter featured on ‘The Orville’ recently (I know it’s anathema to mention that show around here, so apologies). As neat as the thought is, and as much evidence as we can supply to support it, I really hope that’s not where this is going. ‘Enterprise’ shoehorning in a Borg cameo left a bad taste in my mouth. Sometimes it’s best to leave the mystery in place, especially for a monster like the Borg. There are so many original, untread places this story can go, and I’d like to experience something fresh and new. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

So interesting that you mention the Borg, because that’s ALL I could think about with the probe a week or two ago. And all this talk of learning every possible strategy in order to conquer sounds a hell of a lot like their adaptive capabilities also. Plus the time travel bit (ST:FC), the fact that they come from the far-flung reaches of the Delta quadrant, so teleportation (or using a transwarp conduit that makes it LOOK like teleportation) would be useful… hadn’t really considered any of this before now.

My initial reaction throughout tonight’s episode was that there was a LOOOOOOOOOT going on. To an almost detrimental extent. You can’t juggle all those plot lines at once without making a bit of a mess. Then. The end came. And the absolute silence, except for the waves, during the credits. 1:04-1:10 of this clip is the absolute first thing that went through my head.
